🌊 Chapter 7: The Abyss Stirs
The Awakening Below the Reef
For days, the currents trembled.
The Reef had always moved with rhythm — loyal, calm, alive — but now it pulsed with unease. Every shrimp could feel it in their shells: a vibration from the trench, low and ancient, echoing through the coral.
The Battlefronts hadn’t returned. Only their fading glow lingered near the trench’s edge — a trail of light swallowed by shadow.
The King Shrimp stood on his coral throne, silent, his crown dimly lit by the whispering depths. He could sense it — something vast moving in the dark. Not of the Reef. Not of this time.
“The deep remembers what the Reef has forgotten…”
Then it came — not as a creature, but as a presence.
The shadows twisted, forming a colossal shape — an ancient being made of current and memory. Its eyes glowed with the same hue as XCL, but inverted — draining light instead of giving it. It spoke without words, its voice carried through the water itself:
“Loyalty breeds power. But even loyalty can be broken.”
The coral around the King began to flicker — the Reef’s glow dimming, cracks spreading like veins of darkness through the stone. The shrimp below gathered, confused, fearful.
The King raised his claw. His bandana flowed like a banner in the current.
“The Reef will not bow to the deep. We are the current.”
The ancient shape moved closer, its presence bending the light. The ocean darkened, the crown’s glow flickered once more — and then, silence.
Only the faint pulse of XCL remained, echoing like a heartbeat through the endless blue.
“Every Reef has roots… and some roots grow back toward the dark.”
